Calcium Signaling in “Other” Brain Cells: Astrocytes and Pericytes

Jillian Stobart joined the College of Pharmacy in the Rady Faculty of Heath Sciences as an Assistant Professor in April 2018. She completed her B.Sc. in Biochemistry in 2006 and Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 2012 at the University of Manitoba. She then moved to the University of Zurich in Switzerland for a postdoctoral position. Jill’s research is focussed on calcium signaling in two different brain cells: astrocytes and pericytes. She uses novel genetic tools and in vivo two-photon microscopy to study these cells with the aim of understanding the mechanisms that regulate calcium and the functional relevance of calcium signaling, particularly during synaptic modulation (astrocytes) and the regulation of blood flow (pericytes). Her work has been published in high impact journals, and she has received several awards including Heart and Stroke Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship and the CIHR Brain Star Award (2013).
