Safe Work Practices, Safe Job Procedures and Physical Plant Safety Rules

There seems to be a lot of confusion over the differences between a Safe
Work Practice (SWP), Safe Job Procedure (SJP) and a Physical Plant Safety
Rule. This confusion has been demonstrated at the on-site visits and on-line
COR quizzes. The following is a point of clarification.

SWP

*	Chapter 3 of the Safety Manual
*	The objective of a SWP is to identify hazards and develop a practice
to prevent and reduce incidents
*	The are universal, meaning they apply to everyone in Physical Plant
*	They are generally developed in collaboration between workers and
management
*	Three examples are:

*	Asbestos Decontamination
*	Emergency Work
*	Property Damage

SJP

*	Chapter 4 of the Safety Manual
*	The objective of a SJP is to identify hazards and develop a
procedure to prevent and reduce incidents
*	The are not universal, meaning they apply to one Work Unit in
Physical Plant
*	They are a step-by-step procedure
*	They are generally developed in collaboration between workers and
management
*	Examples are:

*	Paint Gun Cleaning
*	Moving Material Safely
*	Auto Scrubber
*	Loading and Unloading Trucks with a Fork Lift
*	Eyewash Station Maintenance
*	Using a Pedestal Grinder
*	Duff Roblin Generator Test
*	Mini-Rooter (for 3" and 4" Lines)

Physical Plant Safety Rules

*	Chapter 5 of the Safety Manual
*	The aim of a Safety Rule is behaviour modification with an objective
of helping us remain safe
*	The are universal, meaning they apply to all Work Units in Physical
Plant
*	Examples are:

*	All new hires must have a Physical Plant safety and health
orientation and Work Unit safety orientation
*	Injuries, no matter how minor must be reported to the supervisor
*	"Suspected" asbestos must be reported to the supervisor
*	Personal Protective Equipment must be worn as required
*	Vehicle seatbelts must be work if provided in the vehicle
*	No smoking in buildings or vehicles
*	Use proper lifting techniques in order to prevent back injury
*	All signs are to be obeyed; i.e., "Wear Proper Hearing Protection"
