I have enquired about how best to get Krishna access to the website, and will relay the response when it comes in.

It's important to note that the CFP is being distributed far and fast. We will need to make sure these readers see the website as soon as it is ready.

Seconding Krishna here. Our attractive CFP directs folks to the website. But if the website isn't clear about who is organizing this conference, and if the website contains only an expanded version of the CFP, it doesn't inspire confidence in folks considering submitting something.

Jim, forgive me, but I’m not sure what’s at issue, here, re: revising the website – even in its most basic form – such that it’s more attractive, professional and, more importantly, standardized. (It’s literally a page with just the CFP. That’s it. Not a website, does that make.) I’m more than happy to do this for us, I assure you. I mean, I can't imagine how improving on the look and brand of our webpage could undermine things re: CFP, yes?

I don’t wish to step on anyone’s toes — and, hear! hear! to those who have maintained our site as of this writing — but what I’m asking, quite simply, is to add a banner, some tabs, some contact info., some links about the history of the 1919 strike, etc. Easy-peasy!

OR, I can make these things, too, and supply these pieces to whomever administrates the page presently — and they can upload these bits.

At length, it’s such an easy thing to do, and it would make our efforts more attractive to prospective attendees/presenters, etc. I mean, perhaps there’s some (for now) seemingly unassailable bureaucracy in place, which is a complication beyond my knowing??

In any case, my thoughts for now.

Hope you’re all well!

Krishna

I thought I’d weigh in.  I actually think the website is, for the most part, fine as it is for the moment, although I think it would help to say a bit about who we are.  But I don’t think anyone expects much more than what’s there for now.

The most important thing, of course, is the CFP and that’s all we immediately have, and need.  It is true that conference websites do have a number of tabs, as ours will in the future.  The other tabs that conferences have typically relate to travel, accommodation, and the nuts and bolts about coming to the conference.  That all lays in the future.

As things become clearer, we want all of this information on the site, of course.  But we also want information about other events in the city related to the centenary. But that’s as yet unclear as well.  Certainly, we will eventually have lots to add, but again, there’s not really very much at this point in time.

My only point is that we will be adding lots of stuff, but that’s down the road.   I’m really not sure what is being proposed to be added now.  Even the issue of sponsors is a bit up in the air.  The CCLH and CAWLS have endorsed the conference, as have, I suppose, the MFL and the Wpg Labour Council (officially?), but we have relatively few formal institutional sponsors yet, I believe.  I would suggest we build this list and then put it on the website as soon as we can

For the time being, I think the CFP as the home page works fine.  Myself, I don’t see any rush beyond what I’ve said; we can discuss it at future meetings.

Thanks Janis:  I agree. Typically, conference websites have a number of tabs that provide context for the conference and, usually, links to the organization. It’s awfully bare at the moment.

It would be good if the website clarified who/which organizations are putting on the conference. I’ve had some folks ask, since the CFP doesn’t say.

Hi All:

I hope I do not sound like a nag, but I am a bit concerned about the sorry state of the conference website. Now that the CFP has been sent to many organizations, people will be accessing the website and its’ frankly a bit embarrassing. It does have the CFP, which is beautiful, but there’s literally nothing else on the page.  I suspect that’s not going to inspire much enthusiasm, or even confidence in the overall organization of the conference, and is unlikely to encourage people to submit proposals or consider attending.

I checked with Krishna, and it turns out he still does not have access to the website. I’m pretty sure that when he does, he will work wonders. But he will need access.

I understand he does not yet have a contract. Might that be the problem? I think there are some details that are not quite clear to me; perhaps others know more?

Best,

julie
