To Students, Faculty, Staff and Alumni:

Earlier today in Halifax, the University of Manitoba added its voice to the apologies that have been expressed to Indian Residential School survivors at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

We join other national institutions which have previously expressed their deep regret for these schools and their damaging impact on First Nations, Métis and Inuit people, communities and cultures.

We see this as one important step in the process of reconciliation. We are committed to advance Indigenous education and success in Canada with partners from the broader community. With our statement of apology and reconciliation, I believe we are well on our way to achieving that goal. 

The University of Manitoba statement of apology and reconciliation demonstrates our commitment to Indigenous students, faculty and staff.  Our university remains committed to a welcoming environment where Indigenous cultures and values are included and reflected in our teaching, discovery and engagement.

We trust our apology will be accepted in the spirit of generosity and reconciliation that has been the hallmark of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission process.
