Subject: Important Reminder: Cybersecurity Best Practices

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

In light of recent cybersecurity incidents affecting educational institutions, we are reminded of the critical importance of maintaining vigilant cybersecurity practices. Protecting our digital campus is a shared responsibility, and we must all contribute to safeguarding our information and systems.

Here are key habits to enhance our cybersecurity posture:
  1. Use strong passwords: Create complex passwords on all your accounts, and consider using a password manager to store your passwords securely.

  2. Enable Multi-factor authentication (MFA): The university requires everyone to use multi-factor authentication (MFA) to sign in to university services and applications. Be cautious about unexpected prompts, and never share your one-time MFA code with others. Whenever possible, enable MFA on your personal accounts to add an extra layer of security.

  3. Be cautious with email: Look for the UM external warning tag. It is a sure indicator that if the message sounds suspicious, it probably is.  Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown or suspicious sources, and always verify urgent requests. Phishing attempts are a common entry point for cyber threats.

  4. Keep software updated: Regularly update your operating system, applications, and anti-virus software to protect against the latest vulnerabilities.

  5. Secure your devices: Use strong passwords, encryption, and screen locks to protect your personal devices.

Your awareness and actions can make a significant difference in our collective cybersecurity efforts. If you encounter any suspicious activity or have concerns about your digital security, please contact the IST Service Desk immediately.

Key resources:
Together, we can maintain a secure and resilient digital environment for our entire community.

Sincerely,

Mario Lebar
