Message from Laurie Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students)

The University of Manitoba condemns the tragic and unjust death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody and is committed to supporting impacted students during this challenging time.

Since this complex situation began to unfold in Iran, we have heard from many of you about how this is impacting you personally and academically. We have responded directly to student comments and concerns including sharing available resources and supports.

The Provost’s Office has also asked all Deans to ensure Instructors and Sessionals who are supervising or teaching a student impacted by the current situation in Iran exercise compassion during this challenging time.

The Spiritual Care and Multifaith Team is planning a supportive gathering for students, to offer a safe space for sharing and support. It is scheduled to take place today from 4:30-6 p.m. and registrations are via email to spiritual care at spiritualcare@umanitoba.ca. Find more details here.

Thank you to those students, student leaders, the Iranian Student Association, staff and faculty who have shared feedback and concerns. In alignment with UMGSA’s recent motion, we affirm UM’s support for the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Our university community is strengthened by your compassion, resilience and resolve.

I acknowledge, with humility and gratitude, that the University of Manitoba campuses are located on original lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. As a white settler of English and German descent I am committed to walking alongside my Indigenous colleagues, friends and neighbours and doing the work that is necessary to honour the truth, right the wrongs, and contribute to lasting positive change.
