Today we can share the remarkable news that the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) has pledged a contribution to the Front and Centre campaign of $15.9 million in direct support of students. This includes $2.4 million for increased childcare options, announced this past June.

This investment – a tremendous example of students supporting students – will revitalize student spaces, double undergraduate research opportunities, and increase the number of scholarships and bursaries for Indigenous students.

Congratulations UMSU, and all University of Manitoba students, for demonstrating the commitment and foresight to invest so wholeheartedly in this university and this province. You have helped secure a more prosperous future for us all.

This testament to the exceptional commitment of our students comes at the perfect time: as we celebrate Homecoming 2016.

I invite each and every member of our vast University of Manitoba community – our alumni, faculty and staff, donors, friends, and, of course, students – to join us at Investors Group Field this Saturday afternoon, at halftime during the Homecoming football game, to celebrate this extraordinary student contribution.

Together we will show our deep gratitude for this investment from students, for students.

So don your brown and gold and prepare yourself for a lively appreciation of our incredible students, the announcement of our new milestone achievement on the Front and Centre campaign, and a few extra surprises.

It will be a Homecoming football game to remember; I hope to see you there.
