Subject: [C-REPS] Discontinuation of Wireless 802.11b support
Date: 4 October, 2012 10:56:23 CDT

Information Services and Technology would like to inform users that 802.11b wireless support will be discontinued at 8am on Tuesday October 9th.

Over the past four weeks, IST has been monitoring the wireless network for any 802.11b devices. Out of 8,000 wireless clients only three 802.11b devices had been identified.

802.11b was the first generation of the IEEE Wifi standard introduced in 1999.  Most of the 802.11b-only clients are now being phased out in favor of 802.11a/g/n devices.  802.11g/n clients are greatly impacted by the presence of 802.11b clients using the same access point. The mechanism that allows the older and newer technologies to coexist reduces the overall efficiency of the wireless network.

We thank you for your understanding. Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the IST Help & Solutions Centre.
