Conflict Resolution: Good Sidepath Design

Attention Planners and engineers who are interested in the design of high quality side path at intersections and driveway crossings: you don't want to miss this month's webinar! Presenters will summarize the findings of a recent safety analysis of sidepaths in Michigan. The summary of these crash trends helped inform the development of a guide for the design of sidepaths. This design process integrates the highest quality of sidepath design into the variety of MDOT project proposals, ranging from minor roadway modifications to full‐depth reconstruction. This eight‐step design process provides guidance for a designer to rate the highest quality segment and crossing facilities. In addition, the project included the development of concise, user‐friendly educational materials to help drivers, bicyclists, and designers address the common sidepath crash types and improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety. This webinar will also provide a summary of the shared use and sidepath design recommendations from the upcoming AASHTO guide.

Presenters:
  • Hannah Pritchard, Toole Design, Minneapolis, MN
  • Megan McCarty Graham, Toole Design, Silver Spring, MD
  • Josh DeBruyn, Michigan DOT
