Streetsblog USA reports "Green man" authority will prioritize pedestrians over cars in parts of London, England as part of the Mayor's ambitious plan to get a million more walking trips by 2041. (Walking Action Plan: Making London the World's Most Walkable City: http://bit.ly/2A7z0Kp) To help meet its goals for "pedestrian time saved," the transportation agency will begin using smart traffic signals with "Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique" to detect the number of pedestrians waiting at an intersection and automatically adjust timing to minimize their wait and ensure they have enough time to cross. At 10 other intersections, they want to use traffic signals to give pedestrians the right-of-way by default. They call it the "green man."
