CANADA RESEARCH CHAIR TIER 2 ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN POLITICAL ECOLOGIES OF JUST TRANSFORMATIONS DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT & GEOGRAPHY, CHR FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENT, EARTH, & RESOURCES POSITION NO. 32696 POSTING DATE: AUGUST 18, 2022 The University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and on the original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation, invites applications for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier 2, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, in the social science fields of Environmental Justice, Political Ecology and Social-Ecological Transformations. The Government of Canada has established the CRC program to enable Canadian universities to foster world-class research excellence. The proposed CRC aligns with the University's strategic research plan that identifies Sustainable Systems for Resilient Communities as a research theme and the Human Rights and Social Justice Theme. The successful candidates will become a member of the Department of Environment and Geography, (http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/environment/departments/geography/index.html) in the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources.

Responsibilities :

The research contributions of the proposed CRC in Just Transformations will focus on understanding the conflicts that are embedded within social transition and transformations based on resource use and environmental change. The candidate will be expected to teach two courses in their area of research and attract graduate students to the program. Service will be required both within the University and through various professional and public organizations linked to the candidate's area of expertise. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research program that addresses the current gaps in political ecology with respect to sustainable solutions, especially around Indigenous peoples and other equity-deserving groups, and Canadian urban and/or rural development. Of relevance would be work that engages societal needs in the areas of human-environment relations with a strong emphasis on justice, power and/or inequity.

Qualifications :

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. and proven success in leading an independently organized research program related to inequity, the legacies of colonialism, Indigenous studies, race/racism, urban and environmental governance, and/or the politics of sustainability. Ability to achieve research excellence and external funding in the areas of environmental justice, political ecology and social-ecological transformations is required. Experience in teaching and mentoring graduate students, research associates and/or undergraduate students is expected. Demonstrated teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels will be an asset. Outstanding applicants with internationally recognized expertise in the broad fields, as outlined above, are encouraged to apply. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A Tier 2 CRC Nomination will be submitted soon after a successful candidate has been selected. Chairs are awarded by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat after a rigorous evaluation, and award decisions are expected in the spring 2023. The appointment will be conditional on a successful Canada Research Chair nomination. Applicants must be exceptional emerging scholars with less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher since obtaining their terminal degree at the time of nomination. Tier 2 Chairs are valued at $100,000 per year for 5 years with an option to renew once. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) will have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program's Tier 2 justification process.
