Hi,

FYI. Springshare is going to update LibChat next week. For our current UML LibChat widgets,  we use CSS to get a bigger font. We will not be able to customize the new widget until the update has been implemented. As a result, the font might be smaller for the first few days after the update.

Cheers,

Wei

This email was sent to all LibAnswers Admin & Regular users to ensure someone at each site is aware of this information for the upcoming code update on July 5th & 6th, 2017.

Hello Wei,

We have an exciting LibChat update coming up on July 5, 2017 (European servers) and July 6, 2017 (U.S. servers - all sites outside of Europe)! The key points to take away are: the new widgets are awesome and you don’t need to do anything to start using them! If you have customized any widgets using the Custom CSS option, though, you will need to update that CSS post-release. More on that is below.

New Widget Features:

The whole user interface for the patron side has been updated, and we've incorporated a few great new features for operators, too! The update is automatic and existing settings transfer seamlessly into the new widgets. You don't have to lift a finger...unless you'd like to take advantage of the new widget options. If that's the case, simply edit the existing widget in your LibAnswers system and save. Boom, your live widget is updated! :)

Operators:

  • Request contact info (email/SMS) at any time - at the start of the chat, during, or at the end.
  • Send a LibCal My Scheduler link at any time during a chat - a link to your own appointment scheduler, or the general system link.

Patrons:

  • Updated patron-side layout is a more familiar messaging view.
  • Integrated Librarian / Department profile pictures.
  • Feedback form is incorporated into the chat area, like a new message from the operator.
  • If the user is disconnected or opts for follow-up at the end of a chat, the contact info option appears (if not already filled out) and a ticket is created in the system.

There's also a new Floating widget, which allows you to have a simple chat icon at the bottom of the screen that opens up to full screen height when clicked. Keep an eye on our blog for more information about this release, including more on the Floating widget & other updates!

New LibChat Widget

Custom CSS Updates Required

Here's the part where you may have take some action: If you customized any of your LibChat widgets using the Custom CSS option, you'll need to update those widgets sometime after the new code rolls out on July 5th / 6th.

How do I know if I'm using Custom CSS in my widgets?

  • Head on over to LibChat > LibChat Widgets in your LibAnswers system.
  • Edit a widget.
  • Check the Widget Appearance section > Custom CSS box.

Location of Custom CSS field.

If you did not customize your LibChat widgets using the Custom CSS field, you do not need to do anything...unless you want to take advantage of the new options, that is. Current settings will transfer seamlessly into the new widgets. If you'd like to use the new options, simply edit your widget in your LibAnswers system.

If you did use the Custom CSS field:

  • If you targeted the existing widget's classes to make CSS changes, it'll simply look like the default chat after the rollout.
How? The CSS class names all changed, so what you're currently targeting doesn't exist in the new widgets. Your widgets will simply display the default look.
  • If you targeted general HTML tags (like divs)...well, you'll want to take a look post-roll out, as that could have an unintended effect with the new widget code.

Take advantage of the new widget options / adjust your widget's Custom CSS within the LibAnswers > LibChat > LibChat Widgets area; you do not need to update anything on the pages where your chat widgets are embedded. They'll automatically update after you save your changes in your LibAnswers system.

While it's a good idea to check your widgets after the roll out, you do not have to update the CSS immediately if you find it's not affecting the look of your widgets.

Thanks for your attention to this LibChat widget change notification...and as always, thanks for being on board! If you have any questions, just let us know.
