Please see and distribute the announcement below regarding the launch of the newest joint partnership between NSERC and the National Research
Council of Canada (NRCan).
In support of
Canada’s Small Modular Reactor Action Plan, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) is partnering with NRCan to fund research on SMRs.
Broad categories for proposed research projects include:
- Robust supply chains for SMRs
- SMR fuel supply
- Radioactive waste management and minimization for SMRs
- More granular examples are provided on the NSERC webpage linked in the title above
University researchers must first contact NRCan to discuss their proposed research project and obtain approval before submitting an application to NSERC.
To engage NRCan in supporting your research project, request an expression of interest (EOI) form via email to smr-prm@nrcan-rncan.gc.ca. Please include your area of interest/expertise in your initial email
to NRCan to help facilitate the process. EOI forms are due to NRCan by 11:59 pm on April 11, 2023.
Once the proposed research project has been approved by NRCan, eligible university
researchers can apply for an Alliance grant with a duration of 1 to 4 years.
The minimum amount that can be requested from NRCan is
$20,000 per year, and the maximum is $100,000 per year.

NSERC and Natural Resources Canada partner to fund research on small modular reactors

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and
Natural
Resources Canada (NRCan) are pleased to announce a new partnership to fund research on small modular reactors (SMR) through NSERC’s Alliance grants program.
|
|
|
|
|
|
This partnership will support the goals of the 2022
Federal Budget to position Canada as a clean energy leader, and of
Canada’s Small Modular Reactor Action Plan released by NRCan in December of 2020. Funding will support applicants in their efforts to address waste generated from SMRs and research related to minimizing SMR waste, as well
as the development of supply chains for SMR manufacturing and SMR fuel supply.
Through these grants, NRCan will provide support up to $100,000 per year, for up to four years. NSERC’s contribution will be calculated using the Alliance program’s
cost-sharing formula.

generate new knowledge to support policy and decision-making related to SMRs in Canada’s nuclear industry, as well as to support the objectives of the Canada's SMR Action Plan;
·
enhance the capabilities of Canadian universities to undertake research related to SMRs;
·
increase training and help produce a new generation of nuclear scientists, engineers and policy-makers.
University researchers must first contact NRCan to discuss their proposed project and obtain approval before submitting an application to NSERC. To engage NRCan
in supporting their research project, they must request an expression of interest (EOI) form via email to
smr-prm@nrcan-rncan.gc.ca and
submit the completed form to NRCan by 11:59 pm on April 11, 2023. A limited number of applicants will be invited by NRCan to submit an application for NSERC funding. Funding decisions will then be made based on based on NSERC's Alliance
grant review process. Applications must be submitted to NSERC by August 1, 2023.

Le CRSNG et Ressources naturelles Canada établissent un partenariat pour financer la recherche sur les petits réacteurs modulaires
|

|
|
|
Le Conseil de recherches en sciences naturelles et en génie du Canada (CRSNG) et
Ressources
naturelles Canada (RNCan) ont le plaisir d’annoncer l’établissement d’un partenariat pour financer la recherche sur les petits réacteurs modulaires (PRM) par l’intermédiaire
du programme de subventions Alliance du CRSNG.

|
Ce partenariat entre les deux organismes appuie l’un des objectifs du
budget fédéral de 2022, à savoir positionner le Canada en tant que chef de file en matière d’énergie propre, ainsi que les objectifs du
Plan d’action canadien des petits réacteurs modulaires publié en décembre 2020 par RNCan. Le financement appuiera les chercheuses et chercheurs universitaires dans leurs travaux et leurs efforts afin de gérer et de réduire
les déchets générés par les PRM. Il soutiendra aussi le développement de chaines d’approvisionnement pour la fabrication de PRM et l’approvisionnement en combustible pour les PRM.
Dans le cadre du partenariat, RNCan versera jusqu’à 100 000 $ par année pendant un maximum de quatre ans à des chercheuses et chercheurs universitaires admissibles.
La contribution du CRSNG sera calculée selon la formule de partage des couts d’Alliance.
Le
partenariat vise à appuyer des activités qui permettront d’atteindre les objectifs suivants :
·
générer de nouvelles connaissances pour appuyer l’élaboration des politiques et la prise de décisions relatives aux PRM dans l’industrie nucléaire canadienne et concourir à l’atteinte
des objectifs du Plan d’action canadien des petits réacteurs modulaires;
·
renforcer la capacité des universités canadiennes à faire de la recherche sur les PRM;
·
accroitre la formation et aider à préparer la prochaine génération de scientifiques, d’ingénieures et ingénieurs et de responsables des politiques dans le domaine du nucléaire.
Dans un premier temps, les chercheuses et chercheurs universitaires doivent communiquer avec RNCan pour discuter de leur projet de recherche et obtenir l’autorisation
de présenter une demande de subvention au CRSNG. Afin de solliciter l’appui de RNCan pour le projet, ils doivent demander un formulaire de déclaration d’intérêt par courriel à l’adresse
smr-prm@nrcan-rncan.gc.ca et
présenter ce formulaire dument rempli à RNCan au plus tard le 11 avril 2023 à 23 h 59. RNCan invitera un nombre limité de candidates et candidats à présenter une demande de subvention au CRSNG. Les décisions de financement seront prises suivant le
processus d’évaluation des demandes de subvention Alliance du CRSNG.
Les demandes doivent parvenir au CRSNG au plus tard le 1er aout 2023.
