Subject: Grad lounge snack bar

Dear Everyone,
As you all know, we have snacks (chips, granola bars and pop) in the Graduate
Lounge which are sold for 50 cents a piece. Payment for whatever you take is
based on the honesty system. Take something, drop its monetary equivalent in
the basket hidden in our "secret place". Unfortunately, we have been noticing
that some have not been paying up or have not settled their I-O-U notes. Their
has also been some theft from our money basket.
To avoid the temptation to "steal", we will be replacing the basket with a
small money box that has a lock and key. If you get something from the snack
bar you can either pay the exact amount or take something again next time. For
those who still owe money, please pay before Friday since we will be doing an
inventory of all remaining supplies. Remember, we can only afford to buy snacks
for the snack bar with the money raised from the previous sale. No money = No
snacks!
It's a pity we were not able to keep up the former honesty system. But it is
either the lock-and-key system or no snacks in the graduate lounge at all.
Remember, everything is 50 cents a piece!
Thanks!
Mark (President) and Benil (Treasurer)

Subject: Plant Science PAINTBALL Day
Date: Tue, 30 May 2006 12:08:08 -0500
From: <gervais(a)mts.net>
To: Bev Godard <godardbd(a)cc.umanitoba.ca>
U of M Plant Science Graduate Students Paintball Day
at Shadow Valley Paintball (Morden, MB)
Shadow Valley Paintball is a non-commercial paintball field. It is actually my in-laws farm. My brother-in-law and I have been slowly turning it into a paintball field over the past 5 years. We have a speedball field and about 30 acres of bush/pasture for bushball. We have lots of hills, old oak trees, fences, farm buildings, roads, a race track, a creek and a gravel pit to add to the fun. We even have a big wooden tank in our speedball field.
Date: Either Saturday, July 1 or Saturday July 8.
Time: Noon until 6pm or so.
Cost:
Equipment Rental: $20
(Includes paintball gun, protective face mask & goggles, and free air. You will need to bring old clothes as you will get dirty! FYI: the paint is water-based, non-toxic, biodegradable and it does not stain if you wash your clothes at the end of the day.)
Paintballs: $7.50 per 500 (500 paintballs should last for the entire day)
We will organize carpools so no one will be left behind and there will be a sign-up sheet in the lounge where you can note your date of preference (either July 1 or July 8).
If you've never played paintball before, don't worry you won't be the only one. Paintball is a lot of fun, and I guarantee you'll have a blast!

Subject: Graduate student support initiative

Hi everyone,
This message is from Associate Dean (FGS) office
Subject: Graduate student support inititative (GSSI)
The graduate student support initiative (GSSI) will be an online information
source and referral network that all graduate students will have equal access
to whether completing their programs on campus, through distance or during non-
traditional hours. In short, graduate students wil be able to find the help
they need, when they need it. The GSSI will also foster a sense of community
among graduate students who will be brought together due to the common
concerns about academic writing, research and other graduate issues. Some of
the services provided will include:
¤ advice on dealing with common challenges that graduate students face
¤ resources on academic writing (particularly thesis)
¤ appropriatte referencing strategies to avoid plagiarism
¤ online discussion groups or blogs
¤ tips on selecting the right advisor, setting deadlines and preparing for
defense, workshops, etc.
Thus, the main objective of GSSI is to bring together all the services,
programs and resources for graduate students offered by various units in the
university like student affairs (includes student advocacy, student
counseling, health services, english language centre, housing and student
life, etc.), university teaching services, learning assistance centre,
graduate students' asociation and make the available on a single platform.
To gather all the material, it is important that we know the issues and
concerns facing graduate students from different departments and faculties. To
achieve this objective, we need input from graduate students in the
university. If you or your fellow graduate students have had any problems or
concerns, please ttell us about your issues and how you solved them. This
information will help make the university of Manitoba a better place for
graduatte students in future.

Subject: Fee watch campaign update, 180% differential fee
Hi everyone
We had an amazing turn out today at the rally, at least 200 people! We
could hear you inside the board meeting and it made a big impression on
board members. THANK YOU for all your hard work.
We are extremely disappointed and shocked by the result of tonight's
meeting.
The original budget motion was to create $100 flat fee, increase the
international student differential fee to 160%, and create lab fees of
$10-$15 per credit hour.
In a surprise move, the university decided to increase the differential
fee to 180% and keep the $100 fee for all students, regardless of
courseload.
At the meeting, student members of the board raised several concerns
over the budget process, over the justification of increasing of fees,
and outlined the detrimental impact this differential fee increase
would
have on international students. We proposed several amendments, such as
eliminating the fees and refering the proposed fee increases back to
the finance committee for more discussion, but they all failed. We even
challenged the chair of the meeting to allow international students to
speak, but the board voted against that as well.
The university has officially passed the 180% differential fee
increase, but there are still a few options that we can carry out.
We are having another Fee Watch meeting MONDAY MAY 29 at 5pm in
the UMSU Council Chambers. We will be discussing what steps we can take
from here.
In solidarity,
Garry and Meghan
Thank you!
