Caution: This message was sent from outside the University of Manitoba.
Dear Jim House,
My colleague, Stacy Pyett suggested that I contact you.
This year for the second time Wageningen University & Research organizes the ReThink Protein Challenge<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Frethinkpr…>.
In this international student competition we challenge BSc, MSc and PhD students to come up with a sustainable solution to meeting protein needs of 9 billion people.
For universities the Challenge offers opportunities for their students. As we know from our past experience, participation in this Challenge is a unique learning experience for the students as well as an opportunity to network and profile themselves on the job market. The formula and open topic of the Challenge make it interesting for students with various disciplinary backgrounds and interdisciplinary teams are warmly encouraged.
If possible, could you help us spread the information about the ReThink Protein Challenge among your students/ relevant persons within your organization by forwarding the email below or sharing this flyer<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Frethinkpr…>?
I would very much appreciate your support for this initiative.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Warm regards,
Marta Eggers

Will you pick up the gauntlet?
Wageningen University & Research warmly invites BSc, MSc and PhD students worldwide to join the second edition of the ReThink Protein Challenge.
In this cutting-edge international student competition we challenge you to come up with a business idea or prototype that offers an innovative and sustainable approach to meeting protein needs and targets a specific market. It could be anything from a new source of protein, a new technology to extract proteins, to new protein foods or services that accelerate the protein transition.
Join the Challenge!<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Frethinkpr…>

What is in it for me?
As participant of the ReThink Protein Challenge you will meet and get coaching from top experts from the private sector and academia worldwide. Your Challenge journey will include business model and pitch training, speed-dates with agri-food industry professionals and mind opening Webinars.
We will push you to bring your idea to the next level and give you a taste of what it means to be an entrepreneur. If you make it to the finals, you will get a chance to scoop up part of the €15000 prize pool and you will get lots of exposure. Doesn’t it sound like an opportunity that can boost your career?

The Faculty of Graduate Studies is pleased to offer the Faculty of Graduate Studies Virtual Conference Award<https://universityofmanitoba.formstack.com/forms/fgs_virtual_conference_awa…> for current, full time Master’s and PhD students who will be attending conferences that have moved to a “virtual” format due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The FGS Virtual Conference Award will be offered in lieu of the FGS Travel Award for the duration of the Covid-19 pandemic while travel is not advisable.
Students attending virtual conferences may apply for a maximum of $250.00 towards their costs of attending a virtual conference.
To be eligible for the FGS Virtual Conference Award<https://universityofmanitoba.formstack.com/forms/fgs_virtual_conference_awa…>, a student must:
* be enrolled full-time, and registered in a Master’s or Ph.D. program in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the time of the virtual conference;
* have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.50 in the last 60 credit hours of study (or equivalent);
* be in good academic standing;
* be attending a virtual conference that is sponsored by a recognized national or international organization to either:
o present a paper/poster/creative work that is relevant to their program of study; or,
o are attending, but not presenting, as part of the conference agenda; and,
* submit a complete application for the FGS Virtual Conference Award (found here)<https://universityofmanitoba.formstack.com/forms/fgs_virtual_conference_awa…> prior to the start date of the conference, or up to 30 days after the conference.
Preference will be given to students who are presenting at a virtual conference; however, students attending virtual conferences, and are not presenting, may also apply for this opportunity.
Students may not receive the FGS Virtual Conference Award more than once at the Master’s level or more than twice at the Ph.D. level. The FGS Virtual Conference Award will not count towards the limits on the FGS Travel Award when travel to conferences resumes.
The funding available for the FGS Virtual Conference Award will be spent until the funds are exhausted.
Questions on the FGS Virtual Conference Award may be directed to Kayla Wharton, Awards Assistant, at Kayla.Wharton(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Kayla.Wharton@umanitoba.ca>

Hi all,
Sorry for the delay with the office schedule, we were waiting to hear about new university/department restrictions. New restrictions permit only one person in an office at once even if the space is large enough for two. That being said, everyone take a look at the schedule as you may have had some days removed and/or altered. Please be mindful of your peers and remember to sanitize when entering and exiting. If you run out of sanitizer and/or wipes please let Sonia know.
>From now on if you have any questions or concerns regarding the office space/schedule please contact PSGSA president, Sonia Wilson (wilson44(a)myumanitoba.ca<mailto:wilson44@myumanitoba.ca>).
Note, all previously mentioned restrictions are still in effect (no permission = no access, masks at all times, no grad lounge, fill out covid19-survey when entering/exiting, etc.).
Thanks everyone!
Take care,
Bethany

Hi all,
Please remember to register for tomorrow's seminar!
It would be an excellent opportunity to meet Dr. Timothy Paulitz (Research Plant Pathologist, USDA-ARS; Adjunct Professor, Washington State University) and learn about his research. He is a world authority on soil-borne and root diseases. I have attached a short bio of himself and the abstract for the seminar for your reference.
Hope to see you all!
Thank you,
Sachi

Dr. Timothy Paulitz, Research Plant Pathologist, USDA-ARS; Adjunct Professor, Washington State University
Glyphosate (Roundup) is a key component of no-till systems throughout the world, especially for wheat in the Pacific Northwest (PNW). It is relatively safe, tightly bound to soil particles, is broken down by microbes, and does not have a long residual in the soil. However, there are concerns about non-target effects, especially on beneficial bacteria and fungi in the soil. With high-throughput sequencing, we can generate tens of thousands of DNA sequences from a single soil sample and identify all the microbes that could never be cultured. To answer the question: how does glyphosate affect soil microbes, we sampled the fields of four long-time no-tillers across the precipitation zones of WA and ID, over two years. At each farm, we sampled wheat fields with a long history of glyphosate use, and adjacent CRP land with no history of use.
