Referendum Results

Thank you to all the students who vote in our online referendum on whether to tie UMGSA fees to the rate of inflation. Over 20% of the graduate student population participated, and the "Yes" side won with 57% of the vote.

This increase in funds will allow us to maintain a high level of support for graduate students at the University.

Celebrate the start of a new semester with a delicious East Indian dinner. Vegetarian and halal options available.

Start 2019 off right at our second UMGSA Board Game Night! Join us at IQ's on the first Friday after the holidays for board games, pool, and FIFA 2019 (the video game). We'll provide nachos and fries to keep you gaming all night long.

Guests pay cash at the door. Registrations encouraged, but drop-ins are welcome.

Three Minute Thesis

Application Deadline: January 28th, 2019

The 3MT Thesis Competition is now open for registration for 2019! 3MT is an opportunity for graduate students to significantly develop their communication skills and connection to the wider community by explaining the nature, goals, and significance of their research in just three minutes.

Prizes up to $2500 are available. This competition is open to all Master's and Doctoral students in thesis-based programs.

Submission deadline: January 9 2018

Abstracts on topics relating to Indigenous research will be accepted online, reviewed and notification provided on a rolling basis. Submissions should include a 4-5 sentence bio of author with a preferred photograph for publication.

Research Study on Copyright in Publication


The Copyright & Licensing Librarian at the University of Waterloo is looking for research study participants.This study will consist of a survey assessing researcher knowledge of copyright and author addenda in the publication process. This is important as researchers are increasingly being asked to make their research openly available which requires them to retain some rights in their publications.

Participants will be entered to win 1 of 25 prizes, including a tablet and Tim Horton's gift cards.

Call for Submissions: The Lamp Literary Journal


The Lamp, an international literary journal dedicated to showcasing the creative writing of graduate and professional students, is looking for submissions for its 2018 issue (Volume 8)!  If you write poetry, short fiction, scripts, creative nonfiction, or any other form of textual art, please submit your work to The Lamp at thelampeditor@gmail.com. The deadline is February 9, 2018.
