Position summary

Conducts field trials with canola breeding and research materials at 3-4 sites; trial plans are prepared by Canola Breeder. Technician’s responsibility includes trial seed set-up, seed treatment with chemicals, land preparation, field plot layout, seeding in field plots, plot management, note taking, and harvesting the field plots. The technician will also assist graduate students in their field experimentations.

In winter and during less busy time in the field season, seed increase in greenhouse; this includes seeding and harvesting of the plants.

Duties would require flexibility to work occasionally beyond normal working hours on weekdays, and on weekends, as and when required, during the crop season.

Duties

Field trials:

  • Responsible for executing all tasks for the field trials including disease nursery plots. This includes, seed set-up; seed treatment with chemicals; land preparation including fertilizer application; layout of the field plots; seeding; plot management which also includes fertilizer, herbicides and pesticide application, as needed; note taking; harvesting; and sample preparation for chemical analysis. Field trials are conducted at 3-4 sites (e.g. trials at South Campus and St. Albert; disease nursery plots at Spruce Groove and St. Albert/Leduc); for this, transportation of farm machinery to different trial sites will be needed.
  • Organize and perform analysis of the yield and other data collected from the field trials using a computer. The summarized data will be used by Canola Breeder for selection of materials and germplasm development.
  • Assists graduate students in their field experimentations
  • Communication with industry partner/collaborator regarding field trials (e.g. exchange trials).
  • Duties would require flexibility to work occasionally beyond normal working hours on weekdays, and on weekends, as and when required, during the crop season.
  • Responsible for maintaining seed inventory at the research station. All breeding and research seed materials need to be maintained in an orderly fashion for easy access by the Canola Breeding program personnel. Materials this is no longer needed will be discarded in consultation with the Canola Breeder.

Greenhouse:

  • In winter as well as during less busy time in summer, seed increase of the canola breeding and research materials in greenhouse for generation advance. This includes seeding and harvesting of the plants, and seed preparation for seeding in field or in greenhouse.
  • Responsible for maintaining the machineries used for field plot trials in proper working condition and getting any repairs done (or sending the machinery for repairs) as and when necessary 
  • Help in canola seed quality analysis in laboratory during winter months.
  • Supervises 1-3 summer students and 1-2 casual in field operations.
  • Responsible for safety operation of the field trial and other equipment, as well as providing training to the summer and graduate students, whenever they will be operating the equipment.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc. in Agriculture or Plant Science. Selected candidate need to have Alberta pesticide application license/permit, or required to get it, and obtain approval for driving privileges for U of A vehicles.
  • A minimum of two to three years’ experience in conducting field trial research is required.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining farm machinery in good working order (for land preparation, seeding, spraying, harvesting, etc.).
  • Experience in driving truck, and transporting tractor, plot seeder, sprayer, plot combine, etc. (chained down to a trailer) to different trial sites.
