Translational Taxonomy – Taxonomic Understanding for Disease Management
Join us for a webinar on Oct 22, 2020 at 3:00 PM CDT.
Dr. Carolee T. Bull, Department Head, Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology; Professor of Plant Pathology and Systematic Bacteriology; Director, Penn State Microbiome Center
The term translational taxonomy was coined to refer to basic taxonomic inquiry that informs disease management tactics. Crop rotation strategies, deployment of host resistance, and biological control are three management strategies that benefit from a translational
taxonomy approach. Translational taxonomy often relies on differences in bacterial plant pathogens at taxonomic levels below species or subspecies and may have an additional layer of codified nomenclature. This presentation will describe bacterial taxonomic
inquiry to develop a range of disease management strategies for a variety of plant and mushroom bacterial diseases.
