Details: is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba in the M.Sc. or Ph.D. program in the Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences, has an advisor whose primary appointment is in the field of Human Nutritional Sciences, has achieved the highest academic standing among the eligible students in a given year (a minimum grade point average of 3.85 [or equivalent] on the last 60 credit hours completed -undergraduate and graduate). Applicants will be asked to submit a copy each of the manuscript and the conference abstract on or before the deadline date. This award may be held in conjunction with other travel awards.  The recipient may acknowledge the contribution from the award during the conference presentation or in the paper’s publication.

MZTRA Soil Conservation Fellowship

Research Field(s): 
is conducting research in western Manitoba in collaboration with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Brandon Research Centre, or with any other suitable (as determined by the selection committee) individual producer, private research, government or industry group in the region. Is conducting a research project examining one of the following topics:

(i) the benefits of reduced tillage practices and crop rotations (including but not limited to yield, disease and pest management, nutrient use and losses, soil organic matter, soil moisture, biological diversity),

(ii) practices to improve soil health, agroecosystem resiliency, and adaptation to climate change,

(iii) reduced farm energy use (fuel, fertilizer, pesticides),

(iv) benefits of perennials, cover crops/relay crops in rotation in relation to any of the above,

(v) pulse agronomy in relation to any of the above.

Preference in selection will be given to students conducting research projects involving reduced tillage techniques. For the purposes of this award, “western Manitoba” is defined as west of the Red River Valley (Manitoba escarpment and Carberry Sandhills delimiting boundary).

NCLE Graduate Research Scholarship

Research Field(s): 
is pursuing or plans to undertake research in one or more of the defined NCLE research theme areas and has demonstrated community involvement and/ or leadership abilities, while in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and/ or prior to being admitted to the Master of Science degree program. NCLE defined research theme areas include:

(i) One Health approaches to animal management: exploring how decisions about feeding, care, housing, and health can optimize productivity, environmental impact, animal well-being and quality of animal-sourced foods;

(ii) Livestock as a component in sustainable agroecosystem solutions management: developing and evaluating strategies to enhance the role of livestock in an integrated, sustainable food production system; and

(iii)Data-driven tools to improve industry sustainability: harnessing the power of big data to make better decisions – in farm management, regulation, land use planning and more.
