Subject: [Adr-rlo] Call for Working Group members – UM SDG 6 Hub Working Group

Dear Colleagues:

The University of Manitoba was recognized for its ongoing research and initiatives that contribute to developments in clean water and sanitation by the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and was asked to host (November 2018) a Hub page on the UNAI’s website for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.

A new working group is being formed for the U of M UNAI SDG6 Hub (terms of reference below).

Please forward this email to any faculty members and interested graduate students in your units that are doing working in the broader area of clean water and sanitation. The longer description of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 6 is:

·       achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all

·       access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations

·       improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally

·       increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity

·       implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate

·       protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes

·       expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies

·       support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management

Working Group Terms of Reference:

·       Participate in UNAI SDG Hub quarterly meetings and provide updates on UM activities in the area of advancing SDG6

·       Work to create a comprehensive compilation of the activities going on at UM in all areas of the SDG 6 specifically

·       Coordinate promotion of activities at UM in the area of SDG6 on the UNAI SDG 6 hub page and with the other 16 UNAI SDG Hubs

·       Connect and collaborate with the other 16 UNAI SDG hubs to share activities, knowledge and information on UM activities and gain knowledge from the other hub hosts about their specific SDG initiatives (academic/research/other)

If interested, please have faculty or graduate students contact the Working Group co-chair: Janine.Harasymchuk@umantoba.ca

Sincere thanks.
