Subject: Welcome to the new Carman Research Station supervisor!

All,

I would like to introduce Justice Zhanda as the new supervisor of the Carman Research Station. Justice is very eager to start this new journey with our Department.  His position will start on April 12.  Below is some information related to Justice's previous academic and work experience.   Please feel free to express your congratulations to him; his email has been included above.    Welcome Justice!

Justice Zhanda is joining the department from WADO Inc. in Southwest Manitoba. He was employed as a Research Technician for the past 3 years and was responsible for all aspects of applied research of a wide range of crops grown on the Prairies including cover crops and corn under no till systems. Before joining WADO, Justice briefly worked as a Biological Technician for nine months between September 2017 and March 2018 under the supervision of Dr Yvonne Lawley and Dr. Paul Bullock at the University of Manitoba. The major highlights as a University of Manitoba employee were his involvement in the modification and construction of fusarium head blight spore traps to mimic wheat for Dr. Bullock’s FHB modeling study, as well as processing soybean root samples for Dr. Lawley’s AMF study. Justice also brings Zimbabwean experience in commercial farming of corn, wheat, barley, soybean, sunhemp green manure crop, potatoes and forages including alfalfa, katambora rhodes grass, forage sorghum and rye grass.

Justice attended The University of Manitoba and graduated in 2017 with a Master of Science degree that focused on assessing various thermal indices for modeling grain corn phenological development on the Prairies. As a graduate student, Justice had an opportunity to work with undergraduate students as a Teaching Assistant for Crop production, Agrometeorology, Forages and Soil productivity courses under the supervision of professors from both Soil and Plant science. He also holds a Bachelor of Science (Honors) degree in Crop Science from the University of Zimbabwe and a Diploma in Agriculture from Gwebi College of Agriculture (an associate college of the University of Zimbabwe). He received various awards throughout his post secondary education and these included; the Manitoba Government scholarship, John Dueck scholarship and Carl Shaykewich travel grant in Canada, and DuPont Pioneer international scholarship and Minister of Agriculture scholarship in Zimbabwe.

Justice is married,  has 3 beautiful daughters, and has been involved in various voluntary programs both in Zimbabwe and Canada. He is currently enrolled as CVITP volunteer to help with tax filing for low income individuals in Manitoba.
