We received the following message from the
Faculty of Graduate Studies:
I am writing regarding Master’s Thesis/Practicum Examination
Procedures, section 4.2 of the graduate calendar (pg. 29).
This
section was modified prior to the printing of the current calendar, but
the new wording does not reflect the intended clarification. The current wording regarding a master’s examining
committee is as follows:
The
student’s advisor will recommend a suggested thesis/practicum examining
committee to the Department head for approval, which shall then be
reported to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Office on the “Master’s
Thesis/practicum Title and Appointment of Examiners” form. The
committee must consist of a minimum of three persons, one of whom must
be from within the major department and one of whom holds a primary
appointment from outside the major department. At least two examiners
must be members of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The third member
must be an individual that the Advisor and Department Head deem
qualified for the assignment, is external to the Department, and is
willing to serve.
It recently came to my attention that the
current wording does not reflect the intended clarification. The wording should read:
The
student’s advisor will recommend a suggested thesis/practicum examining
committee to the Department head for approval, which shall then be
reported to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Office on the “Master’s
Thesis/practicum Title and Appointment of Examiners” form. The
committee must consist of a minimum of three persons, one of whom must
be from within the major department and one of whom holds a primary
appointment from outside the major department; both of
these examining committee members must be members of the Faculty of
Graduate Studies. At least
two examiners must be members of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The
third member must be an individual that the Advisor and Department Head
deem qualified for the assignment, is
external to the Department, and is willing to serve.
This intended clarification will be forwarded to
the Guidelines and Policy Committee for their immediate attention. In
the mean time, the new wording will be used to vet all forthcoming
“Master’s Thesis/practicum Title and Appointment of Examiners” forms.
