Postdoctoral Researcher - Scientific Researcher (SE-RES) :

My program is hiring a Postdoctoral Researcher, starting in October 2022. The candidate will be hired  under the Postdoctoral Research Program (PRP) as Scientific Researcher (SE-RES).  Salary Range: $58,563 to $113,877.  This is a full-time job for a contract of 2.5 years (subject to a potential one-year extension).

Background:

Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in improving Fusarium head blight (FHB)  resistance and disease management, but it has proven much more difficult than other diseases. In fact, only a registered single bread wheat variety (AAC Tenacious) is rated as resistant. The slow progress of developing resistant varieties stems from the complex, quantitative expression of resistance, coupled with strong genotype by environment interactions . Also, the poor correlation between FHB incidence and severity with DON content, and the laborious task of phenotyping the disease making selection for enhanced resistance challenging. Furthermore, FHB resistance genes are often linked with  undesirable agronomic traits (i.e. plant height, grain protein content) that slows genetic progress.  In recent years, the pairing of mutagenesis with next generation sequencing has become an reliable technique for trait improvement and the identification of gene function. The development of the TILLING (targeting induced local lesions in genomes) method has significantly advanced the detection of useful mutations in crops.

The role:

In this project the candidate will be working with a research team integrating high-end genomics technologies to contribute to the production of a high quality genome of AAC Tenacious, characterization of a Targeting Induced Local Lesions In Genomes (TILLING) population, production of genotypic and phenotypic data of the TILLING population where germplasm and database will be available to all Canadian wheat research programs.

This job opportunity requires a highly motivated candidate with experience in Next Generation Sequencing. Experience using R, Linux/Unix and/or Experience in coding languages are desirable.

Education:

Candidates must have obtained:

A doctoral degree (PhD) within the last three (3) years* from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural sciences, bioinformatics, plant science, plant pathology, plant breeding, biology, plant physiology, microbiology, natural resources, genetics, biology or a related discipline.
