Most of you should have received the message below.  You do not have to register for the "Re-Registration" course as indicated below because students in the Department of Plant Science register for their "Thesis" each year (see registration approval form for details) of their graduate program.  Registering for the "Thesis" in both the fall and winter terms (if applicable) will ensure that you retain status in your graduate program even if you withdraw from courses.

Please find below two important notices about graduate student registration:

#1.        Required registration and course numbers for Graduate Students.

#2.         Information regarding:  “Extra Courses”, “Maximum Credit Hours” and “Degree Requirements”.

#1.

Information for all Master’s and Ph.D. students who are continuing in their program (except MBA or MPA students).

As you are probably aware all Graduate Students are required to register every September for the coming year (or they will be “discontinued” from their program of studies). Therefore, it will be essential that you (as a continuing graduate student) register for “something” in both the Fall and Winter term.

The most efficient way of ensuring that you are registered in order to retain status is to register for the “Re-Registration” course:

“Master’s re-registration”
GRAD 7020 A02 CRN = 10464 (spanned course – both Fall and Winter term)

or

“Ph.D. re-registration”
GRAD 8020 A02 CRN = 10474 (spanned course – both Fall and Winter term )

This re-registration should be over and above any course registration(s) you complete. If you are registered for the re-registration course (over both Fall and Winter terms) you will retain status in your graduate program even if you withdraw from courses.

The only students who will NOT have to register for both the Fall and/or Winter terms are:

·         Students on a Parental or Exceptional Leave – you do not have to register in the term(s) for which they have the approved Leave. (Students on Regular Leave are still required to register for the re-registration course number in both Fall and Winter term)

·         Students who are certain they will be graduating February 2009. Students graduating in February 2009 should register for their final exercise/project for Fall term, i.e., Thesis/practicum/comprehensive exam/engineering project or the final course or re-registration GRAD 7020/GRAD 8020 for Fall term only.

The CRN’s for the Fall and Winter terms courses that are not spanned can be found by searching the “Class Schedule” on the web which can be accessed through the following website:

If you have questions about registration please contact your department assistant. You can find a list of department and faculty advisors here:

#2.

Important information for all Master’s and Ph.D. students.

This is a notice/reminder to please plan your program carefully. Many of the luxury “built in” checks we had in the former student database are no longer available. It is imperative that you ensure you are registering for only those courses that are part of your Master’s or Ph.D. program. If they are not part of your program then they should be added through your Department office as an Auxiliary course “AX” or an Occasional course “OS”. Also please ensure that you do not register for more courses than your program allows. (Please check with your department on this. If you register for courses that are above the maximum threshold of your program, extra fees will be assessed at the time of graduation when a final program check is made at the time of graduation.)

I would like to draw your attention to the following academic regulation of the Faculty of Graduate Studies:

Students are ultimately responsible for ensuring that they meet degree and program requirements. The advisor (co-advisor), advisory committee and the department must ensure that each student follows the guidelines and meets the program requirements. The Faculty of Graduate Studies performs a final check of program requirements for each student just prior to graduation. Students are cautioned, therefore, to check all regulations with respect to the degree requirements. Failure to meet all the requirements will result in failure to graduate.”

Once again, please be attentive to your program requirements and the directions given to you by your department.

Thanks very much for your attention!
