Subject: ICAN-WISE Scholarship Program 2017 - NSERC CWSE Prairies is now accepting applications from undergraduate students!
Good morning,
The ICAN-WISE scholarship program was established for the Prairie Region of Canada in 2014. The purpose of the ICAN-WISE Scholarship is to facilitate women mentee-mentor academic research collaborations in natural sciences and engineering fields. This is an initiative of Dr. Annemieke Farenhorst, Prairie NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering.
Six ICAN-WISE scholarships will be available in 2017, worth $6000 each, which are to be awarded to students that are enrolled in undergraduate programs in one of the following Prairie universities (2 awards per province):
* Manitoba (University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, Brandon University, University College of the North);
* Saskatchewan (University of Saskatchewan, University of Regina, First Nations University of Canada); and
* Alberta (University of Calgary, University of Alberta, MacEwan University, University of Lethbridge, Mount Royal University).
The value of each scholarship is $6,000. The funding is the student's stipend while working with their mentor on a research project in the summer of 2017.
We are seeking your assistance to forward the attached application form to female undergraduate students who can apply for the Award but also to potential female mentors who are assistant, associate or full professors. The application can also be accessed on our website at http://cwse-prairies.ca/pages/cwse_scholarships/scholarship_applications.php.
Students need to submit their application by April 24, 2017, midnight to Lena.Yusim(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Lena.Yusim@umanitoba.ca>. Each applicant will be informed on April 28, 2017 whether or not her application was successful.
We are looking forward to receiving the student applications.
Thank you,
Kind regards
Annemieke Farenhorst

Dear Martin,
Hope this message finds you well.
As you may recall from recent ORS/VPR emails, Mitacs has a call for proposals open for Canadian Science Policy Fellowships<http://www.mitacs.ca/en/programs/policy-fellowship/about>, 1-year fully-funded appointments to a Canadian government agency. These are part of the government's initiative for informed policy making and/or to identify potential new employees from the academic community. They are open to:
- Faculty seeking a 1 year Sabbatical (coming up this fall)
- PhDs approximately 5 years post-graduation, i.e.:
o PhD students about to graduate
o Recent alumni
o Exceptional Masters graduate students can be considered
I wanted to let you know that the deadline for select projects has been extended to Sunday April 9th 2017 11:59 p.m. PDT. With this in mind, I would like your assistance in spreading the word to your faculty, soon-to-graduate PhD students, and recent alumni encouraging proposal submissions. Taking a quick scan of the available projects, I feel that the below may be of particular relevance to your colleagues in the Faculty of Agriculture:
* Identifying agronomic opportunities for resilient agriculture in BC<https://www.mitacs.ca/sites/default/files/webform/agri_-_agronomic_opportun…> (Project location: Victoria, BC gov't)
Thank you so much in advance for your support in sharing these opportunities. If your applicants have any questions, they are welcome to reach out to me anytime at the coordinates below.
With Best Regards,
Iman

Graduate Student Positions, Department of Plant Sciences, University of Saskatchewan
Project title #1: Understanding soil health in horticultural and agricultural soils
Supervisors: Dr. Kate Congreves and Dr. Melissa Arcand
Project description: The proposed research will examine how different horticultural & agricultural practices have influenced soil health, and will identify which key soil attributes are most important in determining soil health. This project will focus on a unique set of long-term trials at the University of Saskatchewan, which have produced vegetables, fruit, or grains for the past several decades. The project will engage a MSc student in field work (soil sample collection), lab work (analysis for numerous soil attributes such as nutrients, organic matter, aggregate stability, etc.), data integration and interpretation (soil health scoring). The candidate will have opportunities to interact with horticultural producers, provincial and federal government researchers, other graduate students and researchers within the Dept. of Plant Sciences and the Dept. of Soil Science at the University of Saskatchewan.
Project title #2: Understanding nutrient dynamics in diverse vs simple crop rotations
Supervisors: Dr. Kate Congreves and Dr. Richard Farrell
Project description: The proposed research will examine crop residue decomposition and soil nutrient dynamics in simplified vs diversified crop rotations. This project will employ 15N tracer techniques to understand nitrogen transformation and loss from above- vs below-ground crop residues over time, and will focus on a ~30yr field trial located at the University of Guelph. The project will engage a MSc or PhD student in field work (plant sampling, soil sampling, and greenhouse gas sample collection), lab work (analysis for plant nitrogen, soil mineral nitrogen, organic nitrogen, and nitrous oxide emissions), data integration and interpretation. The candidate will have opportunities to interact with agricultural producers, government researchers, other graduate students, and researchers within the Dept. of Plant Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan, and also at the University of Guelph (Dept. of Plant Agriculture & the School of Environmental Sciences).
To apply for either position, please send your unofficial transcripts, CV and names of two references to: Dr. Kate Congreves, Assistant Professor with the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan. Email: kate.congreves(a)usask.ca<mailto:kate.congreves@usask.ca>
Qualifications: Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s degree with a strong background in natural or agricultural sciences. Expertise in agriculture, horticulture, soil, and plant science is desired.
Annual stipend: $21,000 per year for MSc, or $25,000 per year for PhD. Additionally, there are scholarship and teaching assistant opportunities to supplement the stipend beyond this base level.
