To continue to support, empower, and appreciate the multi-faceted Black experiences, the University of Manitoba Black Alliance (UMBA), in partnership with the Afro-Caribbean Mentorship Program (ACMP), has organized a FREE movie screening of The Woman King. The event will include an open and thought-provoking discussion surrounding historical and current African and Black lived experiences. Although the film focuses on a historical narrative that is inspired by true events in Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries, it does illustrate themes such as gender, sexuality, colonialism, and the African slave trade, which we can all learn and begin to understand the African-Black identity beyond what many of us already know. These themes will encourage critical thinking about what "Blackness" means in our Winnipeg community. Our goal is to foster an inclusive and safe space for students (secondary and post-secondary), professionals and community members from all walks of life to communicate, appreciate, learn, and discuss the Black experiences. We use this film not only to entertain our guests but also to encourage critical thinking.
