Subject: Academic English Courses - Winter 2021 remote delivery

Dear Deans, Associate Deans, Directors and Department Heads,

I am pleased to let you know that the English Language Centre (ELC) is successfully delivering Part-Time Academic English Courses remotely.

It will be appreciated if you could share this information with students whose first language is not English.

Last term, students reported that they enjoyed connecting with fellow graduate students, as it gave them a sense of belonging to a community. The vast majority of students reported that the skills they developed were directly applicable to their course work and academic performance.  For a variety of reasons (convenience, no commuting, student comfort) we have seen strong attendance in our remote courses.

A new course, Intercultural Communication, is now available to help students communicate more confidently with people from cultures that may be quite different from their own.

All courses will continue to be:

  • 3 hours in duration
  • 1 time per week for 10 weeks
  • 10-15 students per class
  • Synchronous and interactive (with modest amounts of asynchronous work)
  • Facilitated by highly experienced English for Academic Purposes instructors

Course fee: $150 per course  (This equals $5 an hour)
