Subject: Supports for Bangladeshi Students

Good afternoon,

It is our hope that this message finds you and your family well and safe. We are aware of the escalation of violence in Bangladesh and recognize that this must be a difficult time for you, your family, friends, and community. We encourage you to reach out to the International Centre, and/or mental health support services on campus if you are feeling distressed or need emotional support. Your health and well-being are priorities for us.

The International Centre is here to support you and connect you with resources, either on or off campus. If you are an international student, the International Student Advisors are available Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm. If you’d like to be connected with an ISA, you can contact our Receptionist at international@umanitoba.ca or 204-474-8501, book an appointment online or drop-in at 541 UMSU University Centre.

The University of Manitoba has excellent mental health supports through our Student Counselling Centre (SCC). The SCC offers a variety of options, which include individual counselling. Their services are confidential and free of charge to UM students. Should you wish to talk to one of their professionals, please call their front desk 204-474-8592 to schedule an appointment with one of their confidential intake and triage workers to discuss your situation and gain support.  Their hours of operation are Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm CST.

The above website also includes off-campus counselling, should you need to seek help outside of their business hours. The Empower Me mental health and wellness service is also available to you if you have UMSU health coverage. This service can be accessed by calling connecting with their website at: https://www.studentcare.ca/rte/en/IHaveAPlan_UniversityofManitoba_EmpowerMe_EmpowerMe. Additional resources also include Spiritual Care and Multi-Faith Centre, Student Advocacy and Case Management and Student Services at Bannatyne Campus (only for students studying at the Bannatyne campus).

Affected students who could benefit from special academic arrangements, such as deferrals or extensions, are encouraged to reach out to their professors directly or an Academic Advisor in their faculty of registration as soon as they are able to. For programs and services offered by Financial Aid and Awards, please see here.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need any help or have concerns about how the current situation might impact your studies or well-being. We are here to support you and ensure you have the resources you need to continue your education successfully.

Take care and stay safe. We are thinking of you and are here for you during this difficult time.

Warm regards,

The International Centre
