Happy Friday Everyone,

I am pleased to share that Justin Bouchard has accepted the position of Academic Advising Data Visualization Specialist in the Student Transitions and Success Centre. As a longtime UM employee, and through his various roles (Dean of SJC Residences, Student Advocate, Academic Advisor in FAFS, and in the project for this role), I expect Justin is familiar to many reading this message. I am pleased to welcome him (permanently) to the Student Transitions and Success Centre, and back to the Student Affairs family.

As the role is new, I’d also like to share a bit about the position and the work Justin will be doing. The Academic Advising and Data Visualization Specialist has two main responsibilities: (1) delivery of academic advising within the Student Transitions and Success Centre (STSC) and (2) development and implementation of academic advising tools and systems across the UM advising community.

The position explores and furthers initiatives that support UM student retention and progression, including identification of student populations for whom intrusive academic advising strategies would be of benefit. In partnership with UM units and departments, including Student Affairs, faculty, and other advising offices, Justin will engage in data analysis activities to develop and implement analytical models in order to influence and support evidence-based academic advising strategies and best practices.

Justin will continue his work (from the pilot position), including development and maintenance of user-friendly systems (eg, new DW process), interactive visualizations and dashboards, and data analysis in support of the UM advising community.
