Dear Academic Advisors:

I am writing to provide information about an option for International students whose first language is not English and who are facing or on academic or disciplinary suspension.  These students may benefit from a referral to the English Language Centre to explore enrolment in the Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) as a way to maintain their full-time student status, for IRCC purposes.

These students should be advised to make an appointment with a Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) from the International Centre before making a decision about the IAEP. It is important that international students understand the impacts of transferring from a degree program to an ELC program on their study permit conditions; eligibility to work in Canada while studying at the ELC; and their eligibility to obtain a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after the eventual completion of their degree program.

The IAEP  provides international students with the language and academic skills necessary to succeed in their degree studies. Students learn how to:

• Write summaries, essays and research papers with a focus on academic integrity
• Develop listening skills through lectures
• Develop reading and vocabulary strategies
• Practice pronunciation and speaking strategies to improve comprehensibility
• Give presentations
• Participate in discussions
• Review English grammar
