The
collective agreement in place between the University of Manitoba and the 533
CAW (Canadian Auto Workers) Local 3007 workers – representing caretakers,
food service workers, groundskeepers, skilled trades and powerhouse workers
– has expired. Despite regular bargaining sessions between the union and
the university, an agreement has not yet been reached.
The
University of Manitoba has presented the union with a proposal and remains hopeful
that an agreement still will be achieved. The union has set a meeting for its
membership for the evening of Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at which time
it’s possible they may decide to take strike action immediately.
Strike
action could occur therefore as early as 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 16, and
there may be traffic delays getting to the University due to picketing
activity.
Classes will
continue as scheduled. Libraries will remain open. Limited food services and
custodial services will be available.
