Message from Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor, and Diane Hiebert-Murphy, Provost and Vice-President (Academic)

Dear UM community,

The University of Manitoba has launched the UM Demographic Census, a short demographic questionnaire designed to help us better understand the diversity of our campus community.

This initiative supports UM’s commitment to fostering a vibrant, inclusive environment—one where everyone feels a sense of belonging and can thrive as their authentic selves. It also fulfills the recommendations of the President’s Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

UM is committed to strengthening the collection of demographic, self-identification data from students, staff, and faculty, such as Indigeneity, gender, racialized identities, religions and spiritualities, sexualities, and disabilities and chronic health conditions. This data helps UM better understand who we serve and is essential for identifying and addressing inequities.

UM Demographic Census data will inform the development of targeted programs, services, and policies that support our community and enable us to track progress toward the equity and inclusion goals we have set.

Your participation:

• Participation is completely voluntary.
• All responses are private and confidential. Data will be accessed only for analytical purposes and reported in aggregate form, with no personally identifiable information shared.
• The questionnaire typically takes less than five minutes to complete.
• This is an ongoing data collection activity that will continue to support UM’s equity, accessibility, diversity, and inclusion efforts over time. You can complete the UM Demographic Census at any time and update your responses as your circumstances change.
