Name the Greenway Ponds Contest

If you were to explore Bishop Grandin Greenway, you may be surprised to find that

hidden from the street are 3 small retention ponds. Fondly referred to as “pond 1, pond 2

and pond 3” they are teeming with aquatic/plant life, attract birds and wildlife and provide

every-changing scenery to those who travel the trail.

We figure the time has come to give these ponds some recognition for the part they

play on the Greenway; to gain an identity that reflect their unique character and link to

St.Vital. And since Bishop Grandin Greenway (BGG) is a ribbon of natural green space

to be used by our community, it should be our community who gets to name the ponds.

The names should be easy to remember and ideally have some association

with the pond itself, its unique attributes, the environment, or St.Vital’s history.

Contest closes midnight March 11th, 2011. Submissions will be presented to

a panel of judges comprised of local area residents who will create a short

list of their top choices/pond, which will be forwarded to City of Winnipeg

Committee for approval.

Winners will be published in the Lance and the pond names will be posted

on the Bishop Grandin Greenway web site www.bishopgrandingreenway.com.

The ponds’ new names will be officially announced at BGG International

Trails Day June 4th, 2011.

Contest Rules:

The names could be related to natural environment surrounding the ponds, reflect

active living, or recognize our local history. They should be unique and not already

used in other locations in Winnipeg.(Names of individuals, family names, service

organizations and businesses will not be considered.)

Briefly describe your reason(s) for your submission (s), include your name, contact

information (phone/email address). Please specify which pond; #1 (east of River Road);

Pond #2 (west of St.Mary’s Road); Pond # 3 (west of St.Annes’ Road, near Home Depot).
