Fellowship Programme for Studies in the High North

Fellowships may be awarded to students from Russia, the USA and Canada to study in northern Norway for up 11 months.

The following disciplines and subjects will be prioritised:

• Travel and tourism
• Studies related to nature management, including fisheries and maritime studies
• Studies in the fields of technology, nature, the environment or social sciences of relevance to the petroleum sector
• Questions related to indigenous populations
• Studies related to industrial development in the High North, including business economics
• Studies of environmental questions
• Other topics with special emphasis on and relevance to the High North region.

The programme is primarily aimed at Masters- and Bachelor-students, but is also open for studies at the Ph.D.-level. The fellowships will be awarded for stays of one-two semesters length at the Northern Norwegian institutions.

The institutions in Northern Norway may recruit students through institutions with which they cooperate in the three countries. It is an objective of the programme that the institutions of higher education in Northern Norway should be able to use the programme to establish new agreements and to expand their international network of contacts.

During the period 2007–2010, the Ministry of Foreign affairs will allocate approximately NOK three million annually.

The fellowships will be awarded at the rates used by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. For the 2007–2008 academic year, the rate is NOK 8,290 per month. Fellowships may be awarded for up to 11 months per academic year. Travel support is also provided at the rate of NOK 11,000 per fellow. These rates also apply to Ph.D.-students, and fellowships are awarded as support for travel and study.

Each academic year, all institutions for higher education in Northern Norway are invited to apply for fellowship places. Application deadlines and criteria for selection will be made available here.

Please note that SIU does not accept individual fellowship applications from prospective students in this programme. Such applications will not be processed.

Call for Papers:

Vancouver Island University is pleased to host the 2009 The Child and the Book Conference for graduate and postgraduate students, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, May 1-3, 2009.  The keynote speakers will be noted scholars Perry Nodelman and Mavis Reimer.  For conference information, see www.viu.ca/childandbook .

We particularly invite proposals for papers exploring the conference theme, although all scholarly papers on topics related to children's literature will be given careful consideration.

The theme of this year's conference is This Land is Our Land, and we welcome proposals on the following topics:

• Children's literature and place
• Children's literature and heritage
• Children's literature and Indigenous Peoples
• Children's literature and ecology
• Children's literature and animals

Proposals for 20-minute presentations should be 250 words and should indicate texts to be discussed and the theoretical/critical framework underpinning your argument. Also include a separate brief biography for use by panel chairs when introducing presenters.
