Dear all:

I am writing with good news.  I have money to spend.  The MGS fund has accrued because of an unusual number of award declines.  As a result, I have a one-time surplus of funds.  Ideally, I am seeking students who were in the second year of their Master’s or fourth year of their doctorate program in 2012-13 and who currently do not receive UMGF funding; these students would be eligible for one year of MGS funding.  Nominees should be eligible to be funded from 1 May 2012 to 30 April 2013.  These one-year awards will be valued at MGS values (i.e., $15,000 for a Master’s student and $16,000 for a doctoral student).  This fiscal year is drawing to a close.  Nominations must be received by Tuesday 12 February at 4:30 pm. I sincerely apologize for the short notice.  Units are responsible for ensuring that all nominations meet MGS eligibility criteria (which are the same as the UMGF eligibility criteria).  I am open to nominations of students in the first year of a Master’s program or the first, second, or third year of a doctoral program, but these students need to understand they are receiving a special one-year duration MGS as I can not fund multi-year awards without negatively impacting next year’s MGS quotas.

Please Note:
1. Any Master’s student that transferred to a Ph.D. program in the period 1 May 2012 to present is only eligible for Master’s level funding; and
2. Recommendations will be ranked in order of GPA and awarded until the surplus funds are exhausted.

Units should complete and send a 2012/2013 MGS Recommendation Form (attached) to Rosemary Visevic (Rosemary.Visevic@ad.umanitoba.ca, ext. 9836) by Tuesday 12 February at 4:30 p.m.  Due to the tight time line I cannot accept nominations after this deadline.

I appreciate your assistance in supporting our graduate students and doing what we can to ensure they have an exceptional experience.
