Dear MPT1,
We reviewed the PT6124 amputee notes in our last session together to guide your preparation for the amputee section of the exam, but I would like to revisit the following items to ensure you do not have any confusion
with them.
- At the bottom of p. 11, the important information is under “Determinants of readiness for casting” as these 3 criteria indicate that the patient is ready to receive
their prosthesis and begin walking. Note that the 3rd criteria states that patients should be tolerating 60 mmHg of compression, but you should change this to 40 mmHg as that is the amount of compression they experience with their shrinker sock.
You do not need to know “Determination of Prosthetic Candidacy” or “Mobility Categories” on p. 11.
- You need to know “Advanced Mobility Activities” on P. 16.
- You need to be able to provide a possible prosthetic cause and an amputee cause for the “Prosthetic Gait Deviations”, as we discussed in class (pp. 21-22).
- For the upper limb amputee, you only need to know the 2 sets of movements associated with using a body-powered above-elbow prosthesis similar to the one worn by
our model patient. We identified these on our patient and then clearly defined them in the subsequent class discussion.
