Hello and Welcome to the School of Dental Hygiene!
We will meet sometime in the next couple of months. Among other things, I do the scheduling for the College/School. Attached is a copy of your schedule for Fall 2026.
You will notice that your class is referred to as DH 2 (Dental Hygiene Year 2). Dental Hygiene is considered a three-year program, when counting our direct entry admission process.
Therefore, even though this may be the first year that you have been admitted to Dental Hygiene proper, you are technically in Year 2. I know… confusing…. but if you can figure out that, you are well on your way to a successful year!

Your first session in DH2 begins with a Welcome Session Orientation with the Director and guests at 9:00 am on Aug 17 in D016, Hamilton Theatre (Basement of the Dentistry Bldg.,
780 Bannatyne Ave).
You are required to attend all orientation events as scheduled during the first weeks of your program. Please note that the School has an Attendance Policy and that the failure
to meet the policy may have academic implications to you. This policy is included in all Course Outlines.
Students must report all absences to the course coordinator
and the SDH Office at Dent_hygiene@umanitoba.ca
before any missed class/pre-clinic/clinical experience.
Failure to provide prior notice may result in serious academic consequences, including suspension/expulsion.
You are expected to be available from Monday to Friday, 8-5 pm, for the dental hygiene academic schedule
Please also be reminded that students are expected to be available
until all year-end requirements are satisfied (including clinical clearances). Keep this in mind when making travel arrangements around these schedules, if you have questions regarding what is required, please consult with the School of Dental
Hygiene.
The Office of Professionalism at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences have set up a pizza lunch information session to review some Rady Faculty policy updates regarding the Professional
Unsuitability By-Law and revisions to the Prevention of Learner Mistreatment policy (this is not a required orientation).
Registration is required for this lunch event. Please use the following link to register.
Registration for your classes was completed by the School/College in early July and fees, will be posted soon on your Aurora student account.
Former U of M students, who have previously used Aurora to view your class schedule,
please note the Aurora calendar does not accurately reflect the full dental hygiene program and should not be used for planning purposes.
Schedules are available on UM Learn. For clarification, please contact myself or
the School of Dental Hygiene.
As noted above, all schedule information will be entered into UM Learn and you will have access to most courses as of August 4-17 (they normally open on the start date of the
course). Orientation attachment, information, etc., will be available on UM Learn through the Dent Hygiene 2 general schedule course (DH2GS 2026-27)
unless specifically tied to a course and uploaded by your instructors.
I have attached information on UM Learn and course information needed to create your weekly schedule. Please ensure you follow these instructions carefully and include all courses,
or your schedule will not be complete and you may miss something! It will be the responsibility of each student to ensure that they access UMLearn correctly and are aware of these schedules.
(These schedules will be dynamic and I will be continuing to add information on events as we go along, so please ensure if you link this calendar to your phone or computer calendar, that
the information is being refreshed… or you are manually refreshing the information.)
Fee payment deadline for the fall term is October 7, 2026. Fee payment can be done on-line; via
TelPay; via drop box at Room 138 University Ctr, Ft. Garry Campus. For further information on fee payment, please see the Registrar’s Office fee information page at the following link:

You will not have access to Winter Term courses in UM Learn until January 2027 (until the start date for the course – Jan 5, 2027). For a complete list of start and end dates/holidays/exam
weeks/etc. please see the U of M Academic Schedule. Dental Hygiene/Dentistry/ has its own dates which differ from most other faculties/schools at the University.

Student ID cards are required for card swipe access to the pre-clinical labs as well as to obtain library privileges and for other University services. You can
get a student ID card from the U of M’s Registrar’s Office at 400 University Ctr., Ft. Garry Campus. Attached is an information sheet on some ‘Pop-Up’ ID events at Bannatyne Campus for Summer 2026.
Please bring your ID Card to the first day of classes (Aug 17 at 9 am).
Your card will be collected and provided to the Bannatyne Campus Building Access Coordinator who will program your card to have swipe card
access to the building. Your card should be returned by the end of the day. An e-mail notice will be sent out once cards are ready for pick-up.
You were sent an e-mail from the Access and Privacy office regarding instructions on how to complete the WRHA PHIA on-line training. While some time has been set
aside in your orientation schedule for you to complete this on-line training, it is suggested that you complete it as soon as possible as it gets busy very quickly into the year.
The College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba (CDHM) is a separate entity from the University of Manitoba.
Students admitted into the dental hygiene degree program must be registered with CDHM in order to practice/study as a dental hygiene student in Manitoba. Fees for registration are $50/per year with a $25 late fee should that need to be applied
(payable to CDHM). Re-registration is required each academic year. Students will receive application information during the first week of classes/clinics and must complete and return the application to CDHM prior to September 1 of
each year. Note that evidence of completion of a CPR – Level C course in the last 12 months is required for the application process.
Failure to register with CDHM will result in being restricted from participating in classes until registration is complete.

CPR Certification, FAQ’s and Criminal Record Check (CRC) – CDHM
In addition to the CDHM requirement, the School of Dental Hygiene requires students to have current CPR Certification prior to the start of classes. This certification must be
maintained up to the date of graduation. Please ensure that you provide the Student Services Office with proof of this certification
prior to August 17. Information on how to access some CPR services was sent to you by Jean Lyon during the admission process.
Jean Lyon has also contacted you regarding the collection of immunization information (information on immunization requirements of the School of Dental Hygiene are available
on-line within the U of M Calendar) You will be required to follow the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences guidelines for immunization. Please ensure that any forms are complete and ready for submission by the posted deadlines.
Students with outstanding immunization requirements may be blocked from participation in clinical activities.
Please be reminded that it is the responsibility of every student to obtain and maintain a University of Manitoba e-mail account (see policy at:
http://umanitoba.ca/registrar/email_policy/ ). According to policy, the
School/College will not support external e-mail addresses when communication with our students.
Students are reminded to check this e-mail account on a regular basis as it is considered the official means of communication by the School/College/University.
As per University of Manitoba Senate policy, you are required to submit a
yearly Criminal Record (including vulnerable sector screening), and
Adult Abuse Registry, and a Child Abuse Registry
reports to the School of Dental Hygiene. Please note that if you fail to obtain a Criminal Record report with the Vulnerable Sector Screening portion completed, you will be required to re-apply, pay for and obtain the correct document. A hold may be
placed on your academic record pending the receipt of any outstanding documents. Restrictions on your participation in clinical activities will be imposed until all documents have been received and cleared by the School.
Failure to provide these documents by posted deadlines may impact your ability to participate in clinical activities, which may in turn, have academic consequences to you.
Opening Assembly, the College/School’s official introduction of the first year classes, will be held on September 9, 2026. Further information will be distributed at a later
date. You are required to attend this event. Also welcome to attend this event are family and friends.
Awards Evening will be November 19, 2026. Both events will start at 6 pm. Information on location will be sent closer to the event.
Bursary applications are available on-line on AURORA Student (under the Financial Aid and Awards card). Deadline to apply is October 1.
Please inform the Director’s Office of any address changes or changes to other contact information (i.e. telephone # or e-mail address).
You are also required to make these changes on-line via Aurora Self Service.
You will be issued a mailbox key on the first day of In-Person Orientation (Aug 17). A $25.00 fee will be
charged for lost keys. Please check your mailbox on a regular basis!
The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry/School of Dental Hygiene is a scent free facility, so please refrain from wearing perfumes or strong odor body sprays/lotions.
Unfortunately, parking is not available for students at the Bannatyne Campus. Parking may be rented from the Health Sciences Ctr. by
calling 204 787-2715 or visiting their website at www.hsc.mb.ca/mapsParking.html. Local residences often have parking space available.
