Hi DH3,

On Monday, August 24^th, you will participate in your Clinic with Partners session. This is an opportunity to work through the full dental hygiene process of care on a classmate and refresh your clinical skills before beginning patient care clinics.

As you already know, half of the class will act as clinicians during the morning session (9:00am-12:00pm), and the other half during the afternoon session (1:30pm-4:30pm). You are expected to attend your full assigned 3-hour clinic session and may select your own partner.

What to Expect:

Although you will work through the full dental hygiene process of care, there are specific expectations for what you should accomplish during the session. Please review the attached Clinic with Partners Overview before Monday.

This is a practice session, not an evaluation. Instructors will be available throughout the clinic to answer questions, provide feedback, review procedures and help you prepare for your first patient clinic.

You are expected to take responsibility for moving yourself through the process of care rather than waiting for an instructor to direct each step. Some activities have a required instructor review or demonstration, while others only require instructor involvement if you identify a concern or have questions. Pay particular attention to the “Level of Assessment Required” column in the attached guide.

Some of the key activities you will complete include:

• Practicing a Digital Case Summary
• Completing and reviewing a medical history update and vital signs
• Completing an EOE and IOE
• Completing a comprehensive periodontal assessment for one quadrant
• Demonstrating probing technique on the vestibular and lingual surfaces of one sextant
• Briefly summarizing and verbalizing your DHCP
• Completing debridement of one quadrant to completion
• Demonstrating hand scaling and exploring technique on the vestibular and lingual surfaces of one sextant
• Verbalizing appropriate oral hygiene recommendations
• Considering how you would evaluate the identified human needs deficits and determine an appropriate recall interval

DH2 Peer Mentorship – Afternoon Session

During the afternoon clinic, DH2 students will be joining us to shadow as part of the peer mentorship requirements for the MDHA/SDH Mentorship Program. They have been asked to arrive at 1:00pm and look for their “buddy”.

This is an opportunity to help the DH2 students become more familiar and comfortable with the clinic environment before they begin spending more time in clinic themselves.

Please involve your DH2 student where appropriate. Some things you can show or explain include:

• How you set up your operatory and organize your equipment and supplies
• A brief tour of AxiUm, including where you access commonly used areas of the patient record
• How you navigate the clinic and where commonly used supplies or equipment are located
• A brief overview of the procedures you are completing and where you are within the dental hygiene process of care
• How you organize yourself and transition between different components of an appointment
• Any practical tips that you think would have been helpful for you to know when you were entering DH2 clinic

You do not need to provide a formal teaching session. Simply talk through what you are doing, answer their questions, and help them become more familiar with the clinical environment. Please make an effort to include them in the session rather than having them simply observe from the sidelines.

Please come prepared for Monday by reviewing the attached guide so that you are familiar with the expectations and can make the most of your clinic time. I will also post all of this on UM Learn in our Orientation section shortly.
