Dear Dent 1 students,
On Friday, September 18th, 3-5 p.m., you have a scheduled in-person interprofessional education (IPE) activity embedded in RSTD 1550 Intro to Dentistry. It starts promptly at 3 PM. The session takes place
on the Bannatyne campus. During this mandatory IPE session, we will begin exploring three of the six Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (2024) interprofessional collaboration (IPC) competencies: relationship-focused care/services, team functioning,
and communication. You have been placed in an interprofessional collaborative (IPC) learning team representing students 4-5 other health profession programs. All students are early on in their respective programs.
Your team will meet two patient or family advisors from the patient engagement program with Shared Health and/or the Center for Healthcare Innovation. They will share their lived experiences. As a team, you
will have the opportunity to listen to their stories and engage with them through a team-based question-and-answer session. Please uphold privacy and confidentiality. They may not mention your dentistry in their story; however, the intent of the storytelling
is for you and your teammates to discover themes around the three IPC competencies above. For some, the stories shared may be triggering. If you need to, you can leave the room and return when you are ready--know that the people sharing their stories want
to do so. Please access your resources, such as the
University of Manitoba Student Support Services.
Preparation: The first activity you will do with your teammates is to talk briefly about a poem in relation to IPC. Read the poem written by Robert Fulghum which is called “All you need to know you learned
in kindergarten”:

Attached is a table informing you of your team number and assigned room. Please arrive a few minutes prior to 3 PM so you can locate your team in the room. To promote
team communication and function:
• Ensure the team is sitting in two back-to-back rows and not in one long row.
• Sit beside someone in your team who is not in your professional program.

Reminder: In advance of the learning activity, you should have completed the UML online module introducing collaborative
team-based care. The module is a pre-reading for all the IPE sessions planned for the year. The module takes approximately two hours to complete. There are six quizzes and six optional reflections not included in the two hours. You will need your UM ID and
password to access the module. I will inform your RSTD Introduction to Dentistry course coordinator, Dr. D. Schonwetter, of your completion of the module, as well as your attendance and participation throughout the Sept 18th IPE session. You must
achieve a pass in the module and attend the IPE session to progress in RSTD 1550.
