I hope the new school year is off to a great start.

I am looking forward to working with you in the D3/D4 clinic this year. As you know, D2 students will be assisting with various tasks. This presents a valuable opportunity for them to learn from your expertise and support you with routine responsibilities.

I have advised the D2 students that they should NOT perform any clinical tasks before September 15. Until then, their role is strictly to observe and assist. This observation period is essential to allow students to become familiar with clinic workflow and procedures before beginning to perform clinical tasks.

Beginning September 15, students may gradually complete the following requirements as the student clinician's schedule permits and according to the readiness dates below:

• Extra-oral examination: September 15
• Intra-oral examination: September 15 – may be completed in conjunction with the student clinician's examination
• Prophy and/or fluoride: September 15
• Rubber dam placement: September 15
• Matrix placement: September 15
• X-ray taking: September 15
• Local anesthesia – Infiltration: October 1
  Students must observe at least 1-2 local anesthetic infiltrations before performing this task.
• Local anesthesia – Block: October 15
  Students must observe at least one inferior alveolar nerve block before performing this procedure and must be assisting a D4 student. D2 students are not to perform blocks while assisting D3 students. 
• Retraction cord placement: November 1
