Good morning Students,

Just a friendly reminder, and amendment, to our upcoming Orientation Day on September 1st.  During the 2:15 to 3:00 pm time slot, you will have a choice of which session you wish to attend: 1. The CANU/CANU Education Academy Volunteer Program; Session 2: The Northern Practicum Information Session with Frontier School Division; Session 3: Hearing insights from a recent B.Ed. graduate and first year teacher. Additionally, our Communications team will be present over the lunch hour to capture the excitement of the day, and you may be approached to participate. Participation is optional. Crowd photos may be taken in public spaces outside of classrooms.

 

As of now, you can all access the Orientation MS PowerPoint slides and schedule, alongside additional general important information and instructions via UM Learn – “Student Resources” – “Content”. This UM Learn module will be updated and used throughout your study journey. If you do not have access to this module, please contact Joel ASAP via adu.education@umanitoba.ca.

We want to introduce two new initiatives within the Faculty:

We will be emailing you shortly about our exciting, new Neuroaffirming professional education program for all B.Ed. students, as well as the opportunity to participate in a Neuroaffirming Cohort with additional mentoring and the possibility of a $1,000 dollar scholarship for the first, eligible 75 Year 1 and Year 2 students who apply by September 2nd (more details to follow this week).

 

Also, this year we will be providing free copies (while copies last) of this year’s “Faculty Reads—Indigenous Authors’ Series” book Theory of Water: Nishnaabe Maps to the Times Ahead. Starting on September 1st, copies of this book will be available for pickup in room 203 Education (Student Services Office) for those students wishing to form a book club with program colleagues/friends. The author, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, will be with us on Program Day, November 2nd.

 

We have received a few emails with similar questions. Here is a FAQ list:

Does the faculty have a Wi-Fi/paper sign in for Orientation Day? Yes to both. You can view the Wi-Fi information here. We do have a preference for students signing in virtually via the QR code presented in each session, as this aligns with our Environmental Sustainability Plan. 

What if I cannot make it to Orientation? Please contact this email address immediately.  

What resources do we, as students, have access to/receive? Outside of on-campus facilities, students will have access to software - such as MS Office. You can find this on UM Learn – “Student Resources”, and the University's website.

Will smudging be available in the morning? Yes, and you can participate in room 322 from 8:30 - 9:00 am.
