Can Epi Data be used on a Macbook
Just wondering if Epi Data can be run on a Apple Mac machine. Any experiences??
Thanks for any input Conrad
Hi Conrad,
I don't use a Mac, but the following statement is from someone who does. I hope it helps:
The EpiData website says 'EpiData is currently developed for windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP'. It only runs natively on Windows. The latest Mac OS comes with a Windows emulator, so it could be run on a Mac, but the Mac user would need to buy a copy of Windows and install it on their Mac, partition their hard drive, and then run EpiData using the emulator (called BootCamp). According to website, EpiData can be run with limitations on Linux using wine (another Windows emulator).
Cheers, Suzanna

Dear Conrad.
As Suzanna wrote the released software on the EpiData download site is currently on for Windows, but if you have read some of the email sent previous by Jens Lauritsen, we are currently working on creating a new set of software this will be working on Mac OS as well as Linux.
Quite a few users around the world have with great success used EpiData Entry and EpiData Analysis with Wine. Based on these experience and the fact that Wine also exists for Mac OS X (found here: http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX) i would suggest you try that before you start installing Windows on you Apple computer.
With kind regards, Torsten Bonde Christiansen EpiData Software Developer.

Torsten Christiansen provided a link to the WINE wiki. Although I could be considered an advanced user on Windows and have experience installing apps in Linux, I'm fairly new to OSX. I gave up trying to install the most recent version of WINE because I kept missing some step or other required package.
The easiest way to get WINE working is to install Winebottler (http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/). I think this version of WINE is not the most recent, but it is fine to use. This took me only a few minutes and it installs just like any other Mac application. Then I downloaded the EpiData installation .exe files and they ran just fine. Winebottler creates a C: drive folder for the user and you then install packages like EpiData normally into the Program Files folder below this.
EpiData Entry and Analysis installed very easily and ran just fine. You will see on the Mac that the software actually running is X11, but in the X11 window you have something that looks just like EpiData running under Windows.
It isn't perfect - for example, Analysis locked up after I took a screen shot from the window. However, if just running EpiData, it seems to behave normally.

Hello Jamie Hockin,
Maybe the proram CAPICHE (for WinXP) can help you to get perfect screenshots in WINE in ANALYSIS. I give you here the downloadsite, it is freeware and in my opinion : MARVELLOUS.
SCREENSHOT PROGRAM download
Good luck, Louk Meertens. .
