Immigration updates

    Returning to Canada?

Are you planning on travelling outside of Canada for the winter holiday break? If you are planning on returning to Canada for the start of classes in the Winter 2024 term, then IRCC has some important information that you should review for international students travelling outside of Canada and then re-entering. In addition, the International Centre has some more specific information on our Immigration Information page regarding documentation that we recommend you travel back to Canada with to prepare for your arrival at the port of entry.
If you need to meet with an International Student Advisor prior to the University closure on December 22, 2023, plan now! Appointments get filled quickly! Please schedule an appointment in advance for a greater chance to see an advisor prior to the University closure on Friday, December 22, 2023.

Need a new visitor visa (temporary resident visa)?

If you are planning on travelling outside of Canada during the winter holiday break and need to apply for a new visitor visa, then IRCC has important information on their website about how to apply for a new visitor visa from inside of Canada. On this page IRCC recommends applying for a new visitor visa at least 2 months before you leave Canada, and not to leave Canada until you get your visitor visa. It is also recommended that you don’t book a plane ticket until you have received your new visitor visa.

    Working during the holiday break

If you are considering looking for an on or off-campus job during the 2023-2024 academic year (Fall 2023 and Winter 2024 terms), including the winter holiday break, then it’s important that you review, understand, and follow the strict requirements that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has for international students who would like the opportunity to work either on-campus or off-campus during their studies. It’s also important that you review how the U of M defines full-time status for the purposes of IRCC to ensure that you understand how the institution defines full-time and part-time status at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Off-campus work hours temporary public policy

The temporary IRCC policy on the 20-hour-per-week limit on the number of hours international students are allowed to work off campus while class is extended to April 30, 2024. International students already in Canada, as well as applicants who have already submitted an application for a study permit as of December 7, 2023, will be able to work off campus more than 20 hours per week until that time. Read the IRCC website for more details.

    Application Processing Times

Estimated processing times for permits and visas are reported on the IRCC website. You can find the processing time for a specific application here. Processing time estimates are updated weekly. As of December 08, 2023, the estimated processing times are as follows for online applications:

    • Study Permit extension: 133 days
    • Co-op Work Permit: 130 days
    • Post-Graduation Work Permit: 130 days
    • Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa): 13 days

You may need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) with your application. The processing times do not include additional time to give your biometrics.
