Is there a way to disable the emoticons on the Library H3lp conversation window?

When I cut and paste info with parentheses, it looks normal on the response window (library staff side) but one I hit Return/Send , the left parentheses automatically converts into a frowny face emoticon. So far nobody has commented on it (I don’t know if it appears the same way on the patron’s screen) but one day, someone’s bound to ask why I am giving them a “cranky face”.
