There have been a few glitches with connecting to the Ask A Librarian chat box in the last week or so. Pidgin shows that you’re online, but in reality you’re not - the chat box on the library web pages isn’t active.
This appears to be random, so I suggest you check the UML homepage after you sign in for your shift, to make sure the widget is active. If not, try logging out of Pidgin & logging back in. If that doesn’t work, please call me or the HelpDesk.
