Hello Med 1s,
For the third year, we are excited to be launching CARTSS: Competency in Acute Resuscitation Through Successive Simulation!
CARTSS is a voluntary, student-run program led by Med 2s and overseen by Med 3s, residents, and attending physicians. The program was originally founded at Queen’s University and was brought to Manitoba three years ago.
CARTSS provides an opportunity to develop practical, hands-on resuscitation skills in a low-stakes and educational environment. Across approximately
7–8 one-hour sessions throughout the school year, you will progressively build on your BLS skills and gain experience managing simulated
code blue situations, including CPR, BVM ventilation, defibrillation, closed-loop communication, leadership, and teamwork.
These are skills you will continue to use throughout medical school and into clerkship, and CARTSS provides additional practice before your Med 3 simulation sessions. It is also an opportunity to gain exposure to emergency medicine and connect with emergency
physicians in a supportive learning environment. CARTSS also provides a potential opportunity to become a volunteer leader in the program during Med 2, which can be added to your MSPR!
We have done our best to account for the Med 1 exam schedule when planning this year's sessions. The majority of dates have been secured, and we are currently finalizing the schedule.
We are also hoping to use data collected from the simulation sessions to explore research questions related to acute resuscitation education and simulation in medical school.
Students interested must commit to all sessions. Should interest exceed capacity, interested students will be selected at a
first come, first served basis. Those who demonstrated interest but who were not selected, may be invited to participate in learning sessions later in the year.
