Health Professions Education Scholarship Day Clinician Panel
Do you have an idea for a research project focused on health professions education but you don’t know where to start or you’re not sure how to fit it into your busy schedule? Come learn how other
physicians have navigated these questions and have incorporated meaningful educational research into their busy careers. This panel will include physicians from a variety of disciplines and at different stages of training.
Panelists:
Dr. Justin Cloutier is a Cardiologist and assistant professor at the University of Manitoba. He is the medical
director for the Cardiology Clinical Teaching Units at St. Boniface hospital as well as medical director for ECG, stress testing, holter for cardiac sciences. After completing medical school, internal medicine and cardiology residency at the university of
Manitoba, he completed a masters in health professions education through Maastricht University in the Netherlands and a fellowship in Advanced adult echocardiography at the Ottawa heart institute. His clinic interests include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, endocarditis
and valvular heart disease, and his research interests include how assessment programmes such as “competency by design” and their tools such as EPAs influence relationships and interactions in the clinical learning environment.
Dr. Lawrence Gillman is an associate professor in the surgery department at UM where he practices as an acute care/trauma surgeon and intensivist. He completed medical school and surgical residency at UM. He subsequently completed a master’s degree in
medical education at the University of Dundee followed by fellowship training in critical care medicine and trauma surgery at the University of Calgary. His research interests include point of care ultrasound, surgical education and multidisciplinary crisis
simulation. He is founder of the national Simulated Trauma and Resuscitation Team Training (STARTT) course and editor of the Trauma Team Dynamics textbook.
Dr. Nina Kuzenko is a psychiatrist, Associate Professor, Associate Program Director for the Psychiatry
Residency Program, Medical Director of the Schizophrenia Treatment and Education Program and Psychiatric ICU. Within psychiatry, her clinical focus is schizophrenia. Dr. Kuzenko's interests include medication side effects in the treatment of schizophrenia
(metabolic monitoring for patients taking antipsychotics and monitoring of clozapine-associated myocarditis) and improving feedback given by clinical supervisors to learners.

Health Professions Education Scholarship Day Oral and Poster Presentations
Education and the learner experience is a strategic priority for the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences (RFHS). Health Professions Education Scholarship Day
highlights the educational research and innovation being conducted by faculty members and learners throughout RFHS and provides a space for educational scholars to network and share their research and innovations with other members of the RFHS community. A
session featuring oral and poster presentations is scheduled for 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM on Wednesday, October 8th 2025 via Zoom.

Health Professions Education Scholarship Day Methodology Tasting Workshop
Hosted by the Office of Innovation and Scholarship in Medical Education
Curious about how to expand your research palate? Join us for an afternoon of sampling research methodologies. You will be able to learn about a range of methodologies from survey
research to grounded theory, among others. Each methodology will be paired with examples of health professions education research employing the methodology and a methodology sommelier to answer all your questions.
