Dear All,
The Winnipeg
Chapter Society for Neuroscience would like to make you aware of the
following upcoming neuroscience presentation…..
The
Centre for Research & Treatment of Atherosclerosis Seminar Series: Dr.
Richard Bazinet |
Date: Friday, October 1, 2010
Time: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Location: A229 Chown Bldg.**
(**This event will be video-linked to St. Boniface Campus - Room
R1002, St. Boniface Research Centre)
Department of Nutritional Sciences
Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto
TOPIC: Maintaining brain
polyunsaturated fatty acid concentrations: Uptake and Metabolism.
Dr.
Bazinet’s Biosketch: Dr. Bazinet received his BSc
from the University of Western Ontario and completed his PhD under the
supervision of Dr. Stephen Cunnane at the University of Toronto in 2003.
Dr. Bazinet then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Dr. Stanley Rapoport’s
Brain Physiology and Metabolism Section at the National Institute on Aging
where he examined the brain arachidonic acid cascade as a target of drugs used
to treat bipolar disorder. Dr. Bazinet joined the University of Toronto
in 2006, where he is currently an assistant professor. Dr. Bazinet is
also the 2008 recipient of the Early Career Award from the International
Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids as well as the 2010 recipient
of the Jordi Folch-Pi award from the American Society for Neurochemistry.
Dr. Bazinet sits on several editorial boards and is an Associate Editor
for Senior Associate Editor of Lipids and in 2010 he became the Editor-in-Chief
of Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids.
The
goal of Dr. Bazinet’s research program is to identify the mechanisms that
regulate brain lipid uptake and metabolism (signaling) and to identify the role
of brain lipid metabolism in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases and
neuropsychiatric disorders. Dr. Bazinet’s group uses a combination
of molecular biology, biochemistry and using kinetic approaches.
