Subject: [Nursing-bn-students] SAVE THE DATE: Orange Shirt day

Hello Students,

The Nursing Students' Association (NSA) along with the Orange Shirt Day Planning Committee (the Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous), the College of Nursing, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, the Centre for Human Rights Research, the University of Manitoba’s Student Union, PINE (Pathway to Indigenous Nursing Education), and the Indigenous Students’ Association) has been working hard to plan our annual Orange Shirt Day – Every Child Matters event. We will be honouring this day with a full day of events starting in the Investors Group Athletic Centre on Friday, September 29th from 8:30AM-3:00PM. Everyone is invited!

Orange Shirt Day holds deep significance as a symbol of remembrance, reconciliation, and respect for Indigenous communities in Canada. It commemorates the painful legacy of residential schools, where Indigenous children endured cultural erasure and abuse, and serves as a solemn reminder of the need to acknowledge this dark chapter in Canadian history. By wearing orange shirts, participating in educational activities, and engaging in discussions, OSD encourages individuals and communities to actively support reconciliation efforts and foster understanding. It is a powerful symbol of unity and commitment to healing the wounds of the past while striving for a more just and compassionate society. Considering that this topic may be triggering for some, we have compiled a list of mental health resources including some crisis lines (attached) should you feel the need to seek help.

On September 29th, starting at 8:30AM the NSA will be providing free Orange Shirts at the IG Athletic Centre as you enter to take part in a Teach in for reconciliation hosted by Dr. Sean Carleton, Prof. Brenda Gunn, Dr. Cary Miller, and Marc Kruse. We welcome you to wear an orange T-shirt and join us at the IG Athletic Centre, then HGC to hear some wise words from our Elders and speakers. We will start our walk to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) for an offering of Tobacco to fire. Once our pledge is made at NCTR, we will return to HGC, to observe a cultural performance piece and a feast will be provided to our participants. A more comprehensive agenda for the day will follow.

If you have any questions about the proceedings, we would be happy to provide further information regarding Orange Shirt Day. Please email Ari at alkhafaa@myumanitoba.ca if you have any questions or concerns.

We hope to see you there.
