This presentation focuses on the findings and implications of a longitudinal research study that explored how the couple, when one spouse lives with dementia, achieve life together
through their efforts towards mutuality. Efforts towards mutuality occur in the everyday interactions as couples aim to come to a shared understanding. Three to five joint interviews of 8 different couples living with dementia were conducted. The person living
with dementia experienced varying levels of dependency. Interviews were analyzed using a thematic analysis underpinned by the assumptions of symbolic interactionism. The result of analysis of these interviews is described by a newly developed mutuality analytical
framework. Difficulties in coming to a shared understanding were often shaped by the medicalization and stigmatization of dementia. This study highlights how couples living with dementia maintain individual agency within their relationship.
